About this car

The SS100 was the car that gave the SS name, later Jaguar, its sporting credentials. Fewer than about 300 were built between 1936 and 1939, and chassis 49062 is one of the last, first registered in April 1939 by P.J. Evans of Birmingham. It was a 21st birthday present to its first owner, Denis Patterson, who entered it in the RSAC Scottish Rally within a month.

The ownership history is unusually well documented. The history file includes a buff continuation logbook showing the sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein as an owner, plus period photographs. A later owner, Lord O'Neill, kept the car for 38 years. In 1962 the original engine was replaced with a Mk VII XK unit. During a restoration by SS specialist David Barber's DCM Auto Service, a period 3½ litre engine, number M808, was fitted, and the car still has it. The current owner used it in Brisbane, where it appeared on the cover of Jaguar magazine in 2014, before it returned to the UK.

The restoration is now more than 50 years old, and the car has the patina of regular use. The dealer describes it as driving well, with sure-footed handling and the extra performance of the larger engine. No price or mileage is given on the page.
