This 1923 Daimler D16 started life with a sleeve-valve engine and has since been converted to battery power by Silent Classics. The dealer believes it is the only D16 still extant and on the road, which makes it a rare survivor even before the conversion is considered.
The car was supplied new through the London dealer Stratton Instone to the Duke of Hamilton, for the use of the Duchess's companion. It appeared in the 1926 Lord Mayor's parade, was laid up in 1929, and was bought in 1959 by a garage owner who never restored it. Simon Barringer acquired it in 1999 and spent about five years on the mechanics, a full re-trim based on the original fabrics, and a repaint in blue over black.
The upright landaulette coachwork has no division, and the rear roof folds open. Period details include the supplying dealer's plaque and a full set of original instruments. The electric conversion claims a range of around 150 miles, with regenerative braking and electrically folding steps. It is driven with a battery master switch and a forward/reverse lever, then accelerator and brake like an automatic. No mileage is stated, and the price block carries an "Accepted" marker.
