About this car

This Rolls-Royce 20HP began as a bare chassis, GV058, tested at the factory in August 1929 and sent to HJ Mulliners for a seven-passenger Weymann saloon body. That body is long gone, as were so many fabric saloon bodies of the period. The chassis was restored in the 1970s by McKenzie Guppy and later bought as a rolling chassis by a retired engineer who wanted to build his own coachwork.

The result is a one-off All-Weather Tourer with fixed side-screens. It has an ash frame covered in Prussian blue fabric, cherry wood door cappings, a sliding glass division and a period 'cuckoo whistle'. The bonnet is extended to roughly Phantom proportions, so it looks quite different from a standard short-bonnet Twenty. The build was covered in The Automobile in July 2008, while it was still in progress.

Mechanical history is documented. The engine block was rebored and sleeved, and a new aluminium head with unleaded conversion was fitted. The wheels were rebuilt in 2002 and fitted with new Lester tyres. Ristes of Nottingham serviced and tuned the car in late 2013 at a cost of just under £9,000. The page gives the mileage as 85,294 and lists a file of invoices, factory records and a CD of more than 350 build photographs.
