The Riley MPH was close to a racing car for the road: a short-chassis, six-cylinder sports car built in very small numbers in the mid-1930s, after works MPHs finished second and third overall at Le Mans in 1934. This is 'MPH No 7', chassis 44T 2255, one of only around 16 genuine cars.
What sets it apart is its coachwork. First registered in November 1935 to Stanley Hodgkinson near Southampton, it was fitted with a roomier body by Bertelli, the Feltham firm that also supplied Aston Martin. Marque specialist Robin Cameron's research suggests it is the only MPH with a Bertelli body. It has a pre-selector gearbox.
The history is well traced. It was sold through dealers in the 1940s and 1960s and spent a decade in California from 1964. It returned to the UK in 1974 and was taken on by Automobile Restorations in 1976 for a rebuild that was never finished. Acquired in 2004, it received a full concours-standard restoration and was then campaigned in VSCC events. It comes with a file of correspondence and receipts going back to the 1960s. No mileage is stated.
