MG D-Type

The MG D-Type was built for only a short spell between late 1931 and mid-1932, with around 250 made. This one, PO 5982, is the ninth off the line, on the shorter 7ft 0in chassis. Its door lines, boot compartment and rounded tail look more like the later J-Type, and the dealer suggests it was probably a J-Type prototype.

It has been repainted in cellulose in its original two-tone Saratoga Red and Carmine Red, and the repaint is documented with photographs. The 847cc overhead-cam engine uses a single SU carburettor and an electric fuel pump, and drives through a three-speed gearbox. The original rod brakes have been replaced with hydraulics.

The car was first delivered in July 1932 through Thorncroft Garage in Littlehampton. It was restored from 1990 under prewar MG specialist Philip Bayne-Powell, including a full engine rebuild, and the most recent owner had the rear axle rebuilt. A history file holds MOT records back to the early 1990s, invoices and a copy of the original sales receipt.
