The BMW 328 was one of the great pre-war sports cars, and this 1937 roadster, chassis 85159, is a US-based example with an unusually well-documented story. It was delivered to Motorwagen in Kassel, Germany, in December 1937, and the page says it was later owned by Lieutenant General James M. Gavin of the 82nd Airborne Division. A previous owner brought it from Germany in 1975.
It has its original body and, the page says, the original transmission, differential and brakes. It has been repainted from white to deep red, and the seats have been reupholstered. The original engine was rebuilt by Wayne Obry of Motion Products. A correct rebuilt engine was later fitted for racing in SCCA and SVRA events, and it has covered just over 3,000 miles. The original engine is offered separately as a spare.
The car comes with the original race wheels, two tops, a tonneau cover, side curtains, original skirts, log books and a file of invoices. It is located near Boston, Massachusetts. The page gives the price in US dollars ($610,000), so no sterling price is recorded here.
