The 4.3 Litre was the peak of pre-war Alvis development, built from 1936 to 1940 with a strengthened six-cylinder engine on seven main bearings. It was among the quickest touring cars in Britain, and it competed with Bentley and Lagonda. This one, chassis 18558, carries Vanden Plas pillarless saloon coachwork. Only 17 4.3 Litre chassis received that body, and nine are thought to survive.
The car was first delivered in February 1937 to John Harold Strachan of Cobham. Records become continuous after the war. By 1957 it belonged to Mrs Gisele Harvey of London, and it was exported to the United States in the early 1960s. It stayed on the East Coast for many years before the previous owner, a marque collector, bought it. The page says it has not been publicly offered for about 49 years.
Red Triangle of Kenilworth, the Alvis specialists, restored it. It is finished in metallic grey with a red leather interior. The Alvis Car Record confirms the original chassis, engine and coachwork, and a copy comes with the car. It is right-hand drive, and the Classic Car Club of America recognises it as a Full Classic. Price is on application and no mileage is given.

The maker’s official figures for this model, not measurements of this car (Alvis 4.3 Litre engine specs (period factory figures: 4,387 cc straight-six, 137 bhp). No published factory weight or performance figures for the coachbuilt Vanden Plas saloon, so these are left blank.).
