About this car

This is a 1962 Volkswagen Split Screen camper, a German-built car in right-hand drive. At that date it counts as an early bus, with the small rear window and tailgate, small round rear lights, flat wheel arches, ice pick door handles and the original full-width front bench seat, which is often swapped for later seating.

It has been restored, with the body stripped back and any panels that needed replacing renewed. It is painted in light pastel blue and cream. The wiring has been replaced with a new 12V loom and fuse box. The gearbox has been swapped for an independent rear suspension unit, which the dealer says improves ride quality and gives a higher top speed in fourth. The 1600 Twin Port engine is reconditioned. The car runs on original 15-inch steel wheels with new stainless hubcaps.

The camper interior is bespoke. It has a walnut-veneered cabinet with a gas hob and sink, a Waeco fridge that runs on 12V or 240V, a mains hookup and a leisure battery. A Rock n Roll bed seats three and folds into a double. There are six belts, a pedestal table, a flip-down buddy seat, grey vinyl upholstery and LED ambient lighting. A stainless roof rack and a Retrosounds radio with Bluetooth and DAB are fitted. It is said to have covered little mileage since the restoration, which is not quantified, and comes with an MOT.
