The 23-window Samba is the most desirable of the Split Screen buses, and right-hand-drive examples are scarce. This 1962 T1 is finished in black over red with a white roof, and has deluxe trim, Safari windows, louvre embellishments, round rear lights and a sunroof with its rare Golde handle.
It has been with one local owner for 20 years, was restored in full and has been garaged throughout. The paint is recent, the headliner and outer canvas have been replaced, and the dashboard has the correct German clock. A new set of Porsche Fuchs-style wheels and tyres was fitted, and the bus serviced at the same time.
The mechanical specification is the main point. The 1600cc engine has been reconditioned and runs twin carburettors, an external oil cooler and uprated rocker covers. The chassis has independent rear suspension with taller gearing, adjustable spring plates, Spax dampers, an adjustable narrowed front beam and front discs. Two facing seats in the rear take six, and a platform between them converts to a double bed. It is exempt from MOT and road tax, though a fresh MOT will be supplied.
