About this car

This Silver Wraith is a one-off: a post-war Hooper & Co special built for the oil magnate Nubar Gulbenkian, who wanted a car that looked as though design had carried on unbroken through the war. The result has a fastback tail, faired-in front wheels, headlamps set behind grilles and a curved radiator shell fronting the original Rolls-Royce radiator. Gulbenkian nicknamed it "Pantechnicon". The page lists chassis WTA62, and it was featured in The Autocar in 1947.

The Sedanca de Ville body has a crocodile-style sliding roof. Gulbenkian's three-page specification added electric windows, an electric division and rear blind, illuminated steps, flush handles and frameless rear glass. The paint is the original two-tone metallic brown, and the designer's build file records extra metallic flake in both shades.

The car was off the road from 1968. A full restoration began with Hooper in the 1990s, with the car stripped to the chassis, the aluminium panels removed and the ash frame rebuilt. Various specialists continued the work, and it was completed in 2023. The page gives no mileage, and it shows the price with an "Accepted" marker.

Performance

The maker’s official figures for this model, not measurements of this car (Rolls-Royce chassis specification only (4,257 cc straight-six with inlet-over-exhaust valves). Rolls-Royce never published power output ('adequate'), and weight/performance varied with the one-off coachwork, so no factory figures exist for this Hooper body.).
