About this car

Chassis 72MG is a one-off Silver Ghost built to special order for Lieutenant General William "Tubby" Broomhall, who wanted a car fast enough to see off the quickest Bentleys and Hispano-Suizas. Ordered in January 1920 and delivered in September 1922, it has an engine that revs to 3,000rpm, against 2,400–2,450rpm for other fast post-war Alpine Eagles. The dealer puts top speed at 80–90mph, with 70mph cruising.

The specification reflects Broomhall's demands: CAV electrics instead of Lucas, a side filler on the petrol tank, an engine-driven tyre inflator, silver-plated brightwork and a lightweight, doorless three-seater Cunard body. The registration, KK1331, was chosen for its symmetry, and the aluminium dashboard carries dummy controls to match the working ones.

The car lost its original body and the Barker body that replaced it, and was working as a farm pick-up by 1963. Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust founder Mike Evans bought it in 1968 and restored it until 2012. The current Cunard-style body is a recreation by Steve Penny. It has since passed to Evans's family, and the dealer reports a recent Best in Show at the Masters of Motoring Bowood House Concours. The dealer says it has road tested the car to 70mph. Mileage is not stated.
