About this car

Chassis 58UE is an Alpine Eagle Silver Ghost, a specification built for speed. Its factory build record calls for a "High Speed Alpine Eagle engine", light springing and a lowered D-position steering column. Barker supplied a lightweight two-door touring body with concealed hinges and no exterior door handles, which makes it a much more rakish car than most Silver Ghosts.

It was delivered new to cotton manufacturer T A Stuttard at Brae Cottage, once the home of Sir Henry Royce, and was photographed there in period. It is believed to have covered about 10,000 miles by 1951. Later owners include Rex Broughton of Cheshire, who registered it with the American Rolls-Royce Owners' Club between 1969 and 1972. A technician's report from that time described the coachwork and chassis as unmodified and original.

The car comes from more than 46 years of continuous ownership. The late owner rallied it in America and the Alps, covering around 34,000 miles, and had it maintained by marque specialists including Jonathan Harley, P & A Wood and Jonathan Wood. The interior retains its original black fluted leather, and a leather motoring trunk that belonged to the Sultan of Johore goes with it. A new radiator core is being fitted by Kenworthy & Company, along with a full check-over, before sale. A large maintenance file is included.
