The 300SEL 6.3 put the 6.3-litre V8 from the 600 into the smaller S-Class body, creating one of the quickest saloons of its day. This left-hand-drive 1971 car is finished in silver metallic over a black interior and has a four-speed automatic gearbox and air conditioning.
It was supplied new to the US West Coast, which the dealer says left the underside and structure largely original. A California title document records 51,015 miles in 2015, and the car now shows 51,850, so only around 835 miles have been added since. Before returning to Europe about five years ago it was repainted and retrimmed, including the wood veneers. It has had one registered keeper in the UK, and Martin Buckley wrote about it in a six-page feature in Mercedes Enthusiast magazine.
Mechanical work was checked by Mercedes classic specialist Roger Edwards Motors. A Mercedes-Benz of Brooklands inspection ahead of Goodwood Revival found almost everything in order, with only the hazard warning switch faulty, and the dealer says that has since been repaired.
