The 170 S was Mercedes-Benz's post-war saloon, and the ancestor of the modern S-Class. It combines pre-war styling with an oval tubular backbone chassis and independent front suspension. This one is finished in black and white over deep red leather, with a walnut dashboard.
Its claimed provenance is the main interest. The dealer says that during restoration, fitted luggage and a dashboard plaque, both marked MM, were found in the car. It also says Greek import records show the car arriving at Piraeus in February 1956, and that it comes with Greek insurance certificates from 1956 signed by Marilyn Monroe. These have been notarised, apostilled and certified by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
The car has had a frame-off restoration by Brookfield Classic Cars, plus a mechanical overhaul by Pool Lane Classics costing more than £60,000. The 1,767 cc four-cylinder engine is described as matching-numbers. The file includes the Mercedes-Benz data card, photographs of the restoration and the specialist invoices. The odometer reads 70,457 miles.
