The Escort Mexico was Ford's road-going celebration of its win in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. It used the strengthened Type 49 rally bodyshell with a 1.6-litre Kent crossflow engine, and around 10,000 were built between 1970 and 1975.
This 1973 car is finished in Le Mans Green with black cloth trim. Its current owner, a lifelong Ford enthusiast, bought it in 2014 and had it stripped to a bare shell, then resprayed in bare metal. The engine and gearbox were removed as part of the work.
The engine has been rebuilt by Harris Performance Engines to 1760cc and converted to run on unleaded fuel. A five-speed gearbox has been fitted, and the original four-speed unit stays with the car. Brakes and suspension were also reworked, and the car was rewired and retrimmed with new headlining, carpets and seat covers. It comes with a large history file including the current V5 and numerous invoices.

The maker’s official figures for this model, not measurements of this car (Ford UK published figures for the 1.6 Kent crossflow engine (86 bhp DIN), built by Ford AVO at Aveley. Weight and performance figures are left blank because the commonly quoted ones come from magazine road tests, not Ford.).
