The Type 46 was Bugatti's "Petit Royale", a smaller sibling to the giant Type 41 Royale, and roughly 40 coachbuilders clothed its chassis. This one, chassis 46208, still has its original engine, number 77. It was ordered in January 1930 by the Paris dealer Dominique Lamberjack as one of a pair and delivered that February.
The car was probably first bodied as a four-door conduite intérieure. A previous owner had that replaced with a recreation of Jean Bugatti's Superprofilée coupé, built by Ken Haywood of New South Wales, Australia. The work is photo-documented. The car is finished in black with a yellow panel sweep, and the interior is brown ostrich leather with a wooden dash and wheel rim. It rides on Royale-style wheels with period-correct Goodrich Silvertown tyres, and it won honours at the 2011 Sydney Concours.
Early history includes registration in Agen in 1932, a later return to Paris, and a spell with Baron John Raben-Levetzau, owner of the Aalholm Automobile Museum in Denmark. The car is EEC registered with EEC taxes paid and is currently in Denmark. The dealer describes it as in concours condition.
