Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio Cabriolet

This Type 57 carries Stelvio cabriolet coachwork by Gangloff of Colmar and was ordered new by Francis Curzon, the 5th Earl Howe, a Le Mans winner and long-serving president of the British Racing Drivers' Club. Chassis 57679 left Molsheim in May 1938 for bodying, and was finished that June with a specially ordered hood and headlights set into the wings. It is reported to be the first Type 57 delivered in all black. It went to the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1938 before reaching Howe.

The car is described as matching numbers, with its original engine, number 496. Klopper Engineering carried out a mechanical restoration, while the lacquer paint and leather interior were largely left alone and show patina rather than renewal. Between 2012 and 2015 it completed several European tours and rallies, including the International Bugatti Rally in Vaals and a Scottish event.

Recently about US$36,000 was spent at Sargent Metal Works on valve seals to cure smoking caused by narrowed oil drain-back tubes, and bills are on file. The car is USA registered and located on the US east coast. The page quotes the price in US dollars ($750,000) and marks it as accepted.
