The G90 M5 represents a genuine inflection point for BMW's flagship performance saloon: this is the first M5 to use a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, pairing a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor for a combined 717 bhp and 1,001 lb-ft of torque, channelled through an eight-speed Steptronic and permanent xDrive AWD. The result is a claimed 190 mph top speed and a 0-62 time of 3.5 seconds — figures that would have seemed implausible from a saloon carrying a 22.1kWh battery pack only a generation ago.
