Chassis 296 is an early W.O. Bentley 3 Litre, known as "Victoria Plum" for its years in the Australian state of Victoria and its claret paint, chosen as a riposte to the usual British Racing Green. It was delivered new to Australia in June 1923 with Weymann-style drophead coachwork. That was later replaced by a fixed-head body from Marin and King of Melbourne, and then by the present TT-style body by Roy Ashton.
The car was raced in Australia by brothers Alex and Bill Bryce and returned to the UK in the late 1980s. Mike Smith, chairman of the Bentley Drivers Club Northern Region, bought it in 1991 and rebuilt it, aiming to make it durable while keeping it as original as possible. He used it in Bentley Drivers Club and VSCC rallies, sprints and hillclimbs from 1992 to 2012.
The Bentley Drivers Club has authenticated its history and originality, and a book detailing its racing career comes with it. It now sits in a Northern Irish collection near Belfast, looked after by an in-house mechanic and used sparingly. The page gives no mileage, and the price carries an "Accepted" marker, which suggests an offer has been agreed.
