Rolls-Royce Phantom II Three Position Drophead

This Phantom II, chassis 92GY, was ordered new in April 1930 and sent to Barker & Co, who built a one-off sports torpedo body on it. Its first owner was a Mrs J. James, whose address was on Piccadilly facing Hyde Park Corner. Rolls-Royce records show a special sports speedometer was fitted, and it is still in the car.

The original body has since been replaced with a new aluminium three-position drophead in the style of Barker or J. Gurney Nutting. The car has new two-tone green paint, green hides, dark green carpets, a figured walnut dashboard and a mohair hood. Other details include a fold-open windscreen, a continental-style rear-mounted spare, a spotlight, trumpet horns and colour-coded wire wheels on new tyres.

Mechanically, the chassis has been gone through, with parts replaced or rebuilt as needed. A new clutch has been fitted by Kenworthy Engineering, and the engine is receiving final fettling from marque specialist Stuart Parkes. The dealer says very few miles have been covered since the work. The car has the E-rake steering column, which sits lower than the upright columns of the limousine-bodied cars.
