The Lotus 20 was Colin Chapman's purpose-built answer to Cooper, Lola and Elva in Formula Junior. It replaced the multi-purpose Type 18 with a lighter, stiffer tubular space frame, lower bodywork and a more reclined driving position. Trevor Taylor won the 1961 British Formula Junior Championship in a works car, and the 20 became the car to beat that season.
Chassis 20-J-905 was delivered new to the Swedish driver Jouko Nordell and raced across Scandinavia, passing through several Finnish and Swedish owners. By the early 1980s it was in Finland, where it is believed to have run a modified 1600cc engine before being returned to original specification. In the UK it passed through Xanthos Cars and Dr Mark Green before John Boyes bought it in 2006.
Boyes had it restored, with chassis work by Peter Denty and a correct 1,100cc Cosworth MAE engine built by Richardson, plus a Hewland gearbox and drum brakes. Porsche specialist Andy Prill owned it from 2012, and Martin Halusa from 2015, who raced it across Europe with his sons. The current owner bought it in 2020 and had Hall & Hall prepare it. It ran in the Chichester Cup at Goodwood Revival and was last run in 2023. Eligibility for events such as the Lurani Trophy and FJHRA races depends on renewing its FIA HTP.

The maker’s official figures for this model, not measurements of this car (Single-seater Formula Junior racing car with a customer-supplied, tuned Ford 105E-based four-cylinder engine (usually Cosworth). Lotus published no road-car performance, power or weight figures, so those are null. Layout details come from the car's well-known history.).
