About this car

Chassis 57202 is a Type 57 Stelvio with a claim to being among the very first Type 57s built. The page says it is believed to be a pre-series car, with engine number 47 and body number 11 placing it within the first 50 produced, and possibly only the second or third chassis. It was in existence by July 1934.

It differs from series cars in several ways. It has a split front axle and a wider front track, where production Type 57s used a conventional tubular axle. The cabriolet body has a complex three-position disappearing hood, unique windows and twin spare wheels, and front wings unlike other Stelvios. The body was long attributed to Gangloff but is now thought to have been built at the Bugatti works to Jean Bugatti's design. The car appeared in the first Type 57 sales brochure. It is finished in a light and dark two-tone scheme.

Documented history starts with its order through the Lyon agent Monestier in June 1934 and first owner George Darne. Later owners include a dentist in Aubenas, Henri Girod-Eymery (who showed it to Hugh Conway in 1962) and the collectors Francky Dumontant and Hervé Charbonneaux. It was restored in the 1990s at KCA in Milan, which returned the correct doors and fenders. The current Swiss owner bought it in 2011 and has taken it to rallies and concours across Europe. It is Swiss registered and is offered through Vintage & Prestige.
