About this car
The Stutz Vertical Eight was American engineering aimed squarely at the best of Europe, and in period it was regarded as a rival to the Bentley. This 1929 Type M carries a Lancefield-built, fabric-covered saloon body in the Weymann manner. It was shown on the Stutz stand at Olympia in 1929 and first retailed through Warwick Wright of New Bond Street for £1,495. Few of the 400-odd sold in Britain are thought to survive.
The 5,274cc nine-bearing straight-eight has dual ignition and is rated at 113 bhp. It drives through a four-speed Detroit gearbox. Advanced features for the date include Lockheed hydraulic brakes with a Bendix vacuum servo, Bijur automatic chassis lubrication and Delco-Lovejoy dampers.
The car had a full restoration in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including renewal of the ash frame, and was written up in The Automobile in January 1992. It is said to have covered over 20,000 miles since. The interior is trimmed in tan leather with beige carpets. A photographic record of the work and the original Series M information book come with it, and the previous keeper was a long-standing Stutz specialist. The listing shows the price as accepted.
