About this car
This is a one-off special built over decades by a single owner, combining the light Standard Avon chassis of 1930 with Alvis 12/50 mechanicals. Work began in 1965, and the aim was a car for VSCC racing that handled better than the Alvis Beetleback he had driven first.
The engine dates from 1927 and drives through a "crash" four-speed gearbox. A pre-selector box was fitted for a time, and the facilities for a replacement come with the car. Uprated parts include a Phoenix crankshaft and rods, lighter pushrods and a chain-driven 20/60 camshaft. A VSCC-approved Wade supercharger was added recently. The engine is said to rev safely to 5,500 rpm, and road-going weight is given as 880 kg.
It raced from 1969 to 1974 with a single-seat, Maserati-style body. That body was rebuilt in period 1930 form between 2000 and 2002, and the car took a second place at Oulton Park in 2017. The page says it has never been in an accident and has only been driven by the current owner. It comes with a large history file, five 19-inch Blockley tyres and five road-going Dunlops. The seller is selling because of ill health.
