About this car
Chassis 49002 is one of only 198 2½-litre SS Jaguar 100s built at Coventry between 1936 and 1939. The 100 was the first car to carry the Jaguar name, and its Weslake-developed overhead-valve six lifted output to around 100bhp, enough for close to 100mph in period road tests. This example was first registered on 9 December 1937 and is finished in cream, one of seven standard colours offered.
Its history is unusually well documented. The logbook traces post-war owners including Basil Fox, who bought it in 1954 for £222 after being tipped off about the model by William Lyons himself. Jack Lipman owned it from 1957 and sprinted it at Brands Hatch in 1960, and it appeared twice on the cover of The Jaguar Driver in the early 1960s. It later spent time in the US before returning to the UK in 1987, then stayed with one enthusiast until 2015.
The dealer describes the bodywork panels and mechanicals as highly original, and has sold the car before. The history file includes period brochures, magazines, photographs, service guides, an SS Car Club badge and a 1942 factory visitor's pass. It is said to be eligible for the Mille Miglia guest list. No mileage is stated.
