About this car

The Pope-Waverley Electric was built in the USA between 1896 and 1914, and this 1908 Model 71 is a two-seater from the period when the company claimed the largest automotive output in the world. Early owners of the marque reportedly included Thomas Edison and William Horlick.

Steering is by tiller, and power comes from a 60-volt DC motor fed by five modern 12-volt gel lead-acid batteries. Top speed is around 16 mph on the flat, with a range of 20 to 30 miles. A small generator has been fitted to extend that range.

The car has black leather fenders and electric coach lamps front and rear, plus modern indicators. It is UK-registered as BF6246, with chassis number 4102. The dealer's page links to video of it running, including one at Dunsfold.
