This is a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL "Pagoda" that has been rebuilt from a rusty shell over four years, with a deliberate bias towards driving rather than concours originality. The dealer says the body was restored with new Mercedes panels, glass, chrome trim and floor pans, using purpose-built jigs including a full rotisserie. It is not an original-panel car, and the listing says so.
The mechanical changes are the interesting part. It has a fully restored 280SL engine of 2,778cc, which has a seven-bearing crankshaft and more torque than the 230 unit. A Getrag 265 five-speed manual from a BMW M3 replaces the original gearbox, a conversion the previous owner developed. There is also a bespoke stainless exhaust, 15-inch wheels with 280SL hub caps and power steering. The handbrake has been moved closer to the driver.
It is finished in metallic gunmetal grey with a champagne leather interior and matching carpets. It has a new tan soft top and a period Becker Mexico radio. The odometer reads 54,876 miles. The dealer says over 400 photographs and all the Mercedes parts invoices document the rebuild. The chassis number is 113042-20-003007.
