McLaren M21 Formula 2

The McLaren M21 was Ralph Bellamy's compact, low-drag Formula 2 design for 1972, built by Trojan. It is best remembered for Jody Scheckter's win at Crystal Palace, the only Formula 2 victory ever taken by a McLaren chassis. This car, chassis M21-3, is one of just three known to survive.

It was supplied new to Astor Club Racing International and raced by Steve Prior in British Formula Atlantic in 1975, then in Indylantic in 1976. In the late 1990s Chris MacAllister commissioned Kerry Adams to restore it in works Papaya Orange, alongside Scheckter's own M21. McLaren later recognised the survivors and allocated this chassis identity. The car was shown at the Petersen Automotive Museum's 2022 'The Color of Success' exhibition.

The current owner has raced it in US historic events since 2012, with regular podium finishes. Power comes from a 2.0-litre Cosworth BDG making close to 300bhp, driving through a Hewland FG gearbox. The engine has about five hours running since its rebuild by Teran Motorsports. The original chassis and 1971-dated Marston fuel cells are retained, and spare wheels and suspension parts are included. The car is in California.
