McLaren M1B Oldsmobile

Chassis 66-1 is one of the works McLaren M1B Group 7 sports-racers, built at Colnbrook with 13-inch wheels to exploit Firestone's new tyres. It has a square-section spaceframe and a Mallite floorpan, and it was raced in 1966 by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. Amon finished second at Silverstone in it, and it ran with Oldsmobile V8 power and a ZF five-speed gearbox.

After its works career the frame went to New Zealand. There it became the "McBegg", a George Begg-built special that set a New Zealand land speed record of 177.9 mph before being retired from racing in the 1970s. It was rediscovered in the 1990s and restored from 2012, latterly by Autotune of Rishton.

The rebuild includes a refreshed Oldsmobile engine with dry-sump lubrication, a rebuilt ZF DS-25-0 gearbox, new dampers and brake calipers, and an FIA fuel safety cell. It was finished for the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed and is eligible for a range of historic race series. The page gives no price, mileage or registration.
