Ford Mustang Shelby GT350H Hertz Rent-A-Racer

The GT350H was Carroll Shelby's answer to Hertz's Sports Car Club: a fleet of Shelby Mustangs in Raven Black with gold stripes, built in 1966 to replace the Corvettes the rental firm had previously used. Hertz ordered 999 fastbacks, and unlike the manual GT350, the H cars were commonly fitted with an automatic gearbox, as this one is.

This example was shipped to Performance Motors in California in March 1966, then on to a Massachusetts dealer ahead of delivery to Hertz in Boston. It came to the UK in April 2004 and has had two owners here. It is listed on the Shelby American Automobile Club registry, with the Ford and Shelby VIN numbers confirmed as matching, and it retains its original matching-numbers 289 Hi-Po V8.

The car recently came out of long-term storage, and a substantial recommissioning was done in December 2025. This covered the transmission service, brake master cylinder, calipers and wheel cylinders, a new exhaust system, a distributor rebuild and a new 600 CFM carburettor, with the original carburettor included. About 80 per cent of the paint is new, and the odometer reads 86,354 miles.
