The 400i was Ferrari's first car offered with an automatic gearbox, and factory convertibles were never part of the range. This one is a coachbuilt conversion: chassis 47589 was built in July 1983 as a standard coupe and supplied through Maranello Concessionaires to a representative of the Brunei Royal Family, ordered with rear air conditioning.
It was one of two cars ordered for Prince Jefri, and both were sent to Lorenz & Rankl in Germany around 1984 to be converted to Cabriolet specification with a fully electric roof. Lorenz & Rankl used the cars in their own promotional material. The car then spent its early life in Brunei, where it rarely saw the road, before being re-imported to the UK in 2002.
The car shows 11,200 miles and is right-hand drive, now finished in Rosso Corsa. The page says almost £90,000 has been spent on it, backed by invoices, with maintenance by specialists including Nick Cartright and Bob Houghton. A large history file includes the original factory order forms, Maranello Concessionaires archive letters, the original book pack and the service book.

The maker’s official figures for this model, not measurements of this car (Ferrari never built a factory 400i Cabriolet. Open versions were aftermarket coachbuilder conversions (e.g. Pavesi), so there are no factory performance or weight figures. Engine layout is from the donor 400i coupé.).
